THE SUITE 4

In the two lowest and oldest levels of La Casa Medievale stands the evocative "Soldier's House", so named for the numerous relics found inside dating back to the Great War. This 45 square metre apartment offers a cosy layout across multiple levels, including:

On the -1 floor:

  • Entrance to the staircase area.

On the -2 floor:

  • Living room with double sofa bed and 43” TV;
  • Fully equipped kitchen (fridge with freezer, dishwasher, kettle, electric oven, and induction hob);

On the -3 floor:

  • Antechamber;
  • Bathroom with large shower;
  • Double bedroom with desk area, 32” TV, and open wardrobe.

The staircase area in the living room and bedroom are equipped with air conditioning for the summer, and the entire apartment is thermally autonomous in winter, both with radiators and with a heat pump, at the discretion of the guests, allowing them to adjust the level of personal comfort as desired.

The bedroom and kitchen face south-west and have excellent exposure to the sun until late, with views of the city, the Pontremoli countryside, the mountains, the historic "della Crësa" bridge, and the Verde river.

N.B.: Due to its particular layout on two staggered levels and the presence of an ancient staircase, partly steep, the soldier's house is not recommended for people with reduced mobility.

THE HISTORY OF SUITE 4

Located in the two lowest and oldest levels of La Casa Medievale, the «Soldier's House» owes its name to the numerous artifacts found inside dating back to the Great War. Several gas masks, bayonet rifle pieces, World War I military helmets, an English leather duffel bag intended for the military brass, third reich coins and many other artifacts were found during the restoration of the house, some remaining on display in the quarters.

The room where the kitchen has now been created was once the workshop of a young boy who began his passion for toy soldiers within these walls, and in this workshop, on a table arranged as a tool counter, he enjoyed making toy soldiers of carabinieri and military men out of clay to play with. He also built truks, boat and rifles out of wood to play raids with other kids along the alleys of Piagnaro. He would write down in a notebook all the ranks assigned and all the battle scores.

The stone masonry of floor -3, the lowest, has been dated to us around the year 1100 AD, coeval with the oldest records in the city's historic center. The masonry on these two levels, like much of the entire house, still showed black marks from the fire that devastated Pontremoli in 1495 at the hands of Charles VIII's Swiss troops. No one since that time has laid a hand on these charred masonries until our restoration, which left them in part purposely in evidence in a few places in the house as historical evidence.
